This vase was made from an African Sumac tree removed from a yard in Davis, California. African Sumac is a non-allergenic native of South Africa and is unrelated to the Sumac trees of North America. The wood is white when freshly cut and photo oxides red in about four days in the sun. The finish is Danish Oil. Cracks in the wood are filled with cosmetic grade blue mica in epoxy.

This piece was crafted exclusively for mahal marketplace!

Background: During a trip to Lake Tahoe, Nevada, Nicole discovered woodturner and artisan, Gary Raines. She was amazed and awe-struck at his talent and his humble, kind nature. All of his pieces display the natural beauty and uniqueness of each piece of wood by incorporating the cracks, inclusions, tension, and other “imperfections” into the design as they occur in the natural wood.
